Welcome to the 2018-19 school year. We are looking forward to having your children in our Third Grade classes. Their enthusiasm and energy offer great challenges and it is our hope that your children have a pleasant learning experience.
Third grade is a big adjustment for some students because they are asked to assume a great deal of responsibility. Hopefully we can assist in making this transition as easy as possible.
I am Brooke Burkett and I teach third grade Math, Science, Social Studies, Religion, and Handwriting. Below you will find information about some of our policies and procedures in third grade.
Enhancement Schedule
3B
Monday – Music and Spanish
Tuesday – Library and Art
Wednesday – Music and PE
Thursday – Art and PE
Friday – Computer
Class Rules
The following rules will be in effect at all times and will not be limited to the classroom:
1. Follow all directions.
2. Raise hand to speak.
3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to self.
4. Be prepared for class.
5. Respect self, others, and class materials.
Discipline and Conduct Grades
Conduct grades are issued weekly and will be recorded in each child’s responsibility folder. Each infraction of a rule will count for a set number of marks (Please review front page of Responsibility Folder). The grading scale follows the same as graded papers (93-100 A; 85-92 B; 75-84 C; 67-74 D; 66 or below F). Please note that your child will be responsible for keeping up with the folder. If your child fails to turn the folder in on Wednesday, his/her conduct grade for the week will be an “F.” Your child will bring the folder home each day, which will enable you to see his/her daily behavior. A new week will begin on Thursday.
Please see the handbook regarding school-wide discipline procedures, referrals, etc.
Rewards
Positive reinforcement will be given to students
who follow the rules. The following items are
listed:
1. Tickets
2. Stickers/pencils
3. Total class Popsicle or popcorn parties
4. Extra recess
Books and Supplies
Every student is expected to have all necessary books and supplies at school at all times. Please make sure that your child keeps book covers on the textbooks. Also, it is recommended that you cover the workbooks with contact paper. This usually helps them last longer. Though recommended, I will not require this to be done. It is important that every student have his/her zipper bag at school with the following in it: pencils, color pencils, red pencils, colors and highlighters. Scissors, glue, and tape will be kept in the classroom for use on an as-needed basis. Please do not send pencil sharpeners to school! I have a pencil bucket full of sharpened pencils for all students.
Homework
Homework is an important part of the educational process and is expected to be complete. Assignments and test dates will be written on the board daily. Until further notice, please initial your child’s assignment pad each night. Each time homework is checked, a five point grade will be given for the assignment. If a student does not complete his/her homework, he/she will receive a 0 out of 5 for that assignment.
Absentee/Makeup Work
If your child is absent, it is school policy that you must call the office to request that his/her homework be sent to the office or sent home with another student. The amount of time given to complete the work and/or graded assignments will be at the teacher’s discretion and based on the amount of time missed.
Graded Papers/ Thursday Envelopes
Graded papers will be sent home every Thursday with your child’s white envelope. Please review your child’s work. Corrections must be made for all papers with a “D” or “F” grade. Corrections should be made in red pencil ONLY. Please do not erase any original answers. All papers are to be signed and return to school NO LATER THAN MONDAY. Failure to return signed papers will result in deduction of points in responsibility folder.
Test (this may vary)
Thursday – Spelling
Friday – Vocabulary, Reading and Grammar
All other test will be given at the completion of each chapter.
Transportation
Please clarify by note any changes about the way your child is transported to and from school. If your child will be taking ANY route of transportation that is different from his/her normal routine, it is REQUIRED that you send a parent note to the school. This also includes staying after school for extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, etc.).
Party Invitations
Party invitations may not be handed out at school unless every child in the class receives one.
§Exceptions would be for all boy or all girl parties.
If you chose to send a treat with your child to celebrate his/her birthday please make sure to send enough for 22 students and make sure that all treats or pre-cut or individually packaged.
Check Outs
Students will not be allowed to check out after 3:00 p.m. This is to ensure the safety of all students, teachers, and staff.
Medication
At no time are students to have any medication, inhalers, cough drops, etc. on them or in their book sacks. Medication that needs to be taken at school will be kept in the office with proper documentation on file. Please contact Mrs. Toni in the office for those procedures.
Field Trips
It is our hope to attend at least two field trips this year!
If you think that you may want to attend a field trip, please make sure that all paperwork has been completed and is on file in the office.
You may call the school office and speak with Mrs. Dana regarding the process for chaperones which is required by the Diocese of Baton Rouge
