Youth Legislature has been introducing students to the legislative process since 1978. Students receive instruction and participate in a 2-day mock legislative session at the historical Old State Capitol in downtown Baton Rouge. Students elect a Governor as well as a House and Senate officers and acting legislators debate and vote on bills that have been drafted by fellow youth legislators. Youth Legislature gives students knowledge of the legislative process and teaches them the skills that empower them to be civically engaged. Through Youth Legislature, students will learn that they have the power to make a change, serve their neighborhoods and larger communities, learn about public issues and help create solutions to tough issues and challenges. In short, students become civic minded citizens who will become our next generation of leaders.
