St. Alphonsus School participates in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. Students in 2nd through 5th grade are expected to meet a predetermined point goal each nine weeks. The AR program is designed to foster a love of reading by helping students find books that are appropriately challenging and engaging, while also strengthening vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.

At the beginning of each nine-week period, students will take a STAR Reading assessment. The STAR test assigns each student an appropriate reading level, and students are encouraged to select books within their assigned level as they work toward their individual point goal. Books may be selected from a variety of sources, including the St. Alphonsus School library, classroom libraries, home libraries, the public library, or books purchased from a bookseller.

Parents can monitor their child’s AR progress through the AR Home Connect website using their child’s AR login information. AR BookFinder is also a valuable resource for parents and students. It can be used to check book levels and point values, as well as read a brief summary of books included in the AR program.

Our goal is to encourage students to become confident, enthusiastic readers while helping them develop the skills they need to be successful in all areas of learning.
